Manhattan
Refractive Surgery
Which Manhattan refractive surgery
is right for you?
LASIK is currently the most popular
option in refractive surgery in Manhattan and across the
country. But there are conditions that can keep patients
from being
candidates for the procedure. For precautionary reasons,
and because of hormonal changes, pregnant or nursing mothers
should refrain from LASIK, as should people with severe
health
problems.
People
under
the age of 18 do not qualify for LASIK, as their eyes need
time to stabilize. In fact, it is often ideal for LASIK
patients
to be at least 21 years of age. Other people who do not
qualify for LASIK are those with very low prescriptions
(worse than -13, +6 or with more
than
4 diopters
of astigmatism),
advanced
glaucoma or cataracts, dry eyes, or thin corneas.
LASIK proves to be superior over other
options in refractive surgery. Manhattan Aesthetic Specialists
can explain to you at your consultation the details involved,
but the results of LASIK are apparent almost immediately
and patients can return to a self-sufficient lifestyle
just a day or two after surgery. PRK involves a lengthier
recovery period of about one week with some discomfort
and blurred
vision. It also requires that a portion of the cornea be
removed, while complete removal is not neccessary with
LASIK.
Some Manhattan refractive surgery
specialists turn to PRK when the patient has corneal scars
or dystrophies.
